This is a charming antique miniature edition of Honey Drops, a beautifully preserved little Christian devotional book published by the American Sunday-School Union in Philadelphia. Measuring just 2 inches tall, this tiny red cloth-bound book features decorative gilt lettering and ornamentation, patterned endpapers, and 128 pages of thoughtfully selected Bible scriptures.
A LITTLE BOOK WITH A WONDERFUL HISTORY
Originally published in 1855, Honey Drops was created to make daily scripture reading simple, meaningful, and accessible. Its original preface, dated March 20, 1855, has been preserved in this later printing.
An especially interesting historical detail is the publisher's address printed inside: 1816 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. The American Sunday-School Union relocated to this address in May 1907, helping establish that this particular copy was printed sometime after that date. Although its exact publication year is unknown, it is believed to be an early 20th-century edition.
The American Sunday-School Union was an influential Christian publishing and educational organization dedicated to spreading biblical teachings and establishing Sunday schools throughout America.
366 DAYS OF SCRIPTURE
Despite its tiny size, Honey Drops contains 128 pages with 366 daily scripture selections, including an additional reading for leap year!
The book is organized by month, January through December, with numbered readings corresponding to each day of the year.
It also includes a fascinating List of Subjects covering 31 devotional themes, including God's love, prayer and praise, faith, kindness, charity, honoring parents and teachers, the teachings of Jesus, repentance, obedience, and the promise of heaven.
A POCKET-SIZED COMPANION OF FAITH
Books such as this were intended to encourage regular scripture reading and Christian reflection. Its remarkably small size made it convenient to carry in a pocket or keep close at hand throughout the day.
It may have belonged to a Sunday school student, teacher, or devout Christian who treasured having a little collection of scriptures readily available.
More than a century later, this little book offers a touching glimpse into everyday religious life and the tradition of carrying personal devotional literature.
Its surviving cloth binding, complete pages, and original decorative details make it a particularly appealing example of miniature Christian publishing. While its exact rarity has not been established, finding an early pocket-sized devotional with its contents intact is a lovely discovery.
CONDITION DESCRIPTION:
Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear and signs of use. The original cloth-covered binding remains intact, with light rubbing and scuffing along the edges, minor surface wear, and some gentle discoloration and smudging to the covers. All 128 pages are present and in good condition, with no visible tears. A few pages exhibit minor original printing imperfections where the ink did not fully transfer, and one page has a small crease. Overall, a beautifully preserved miniature devotional with charming evidence of its age and history.
